450 km south of Bogotá, the small town of San Agustín is located in the Colombian Massif, a geographical area in the south of the country from where the three mountain ranges of the Andes that cross Colombia emerge. The San Agustín Archaeological Park extends over an exuberant landscape covering 2,000 km2 and at only 1,800 meters of altitude. Unesco declared it a World Heritage Site, for its pre-Columbian archaeological importance and for being considered one of the most extensive sites of its kind in South America.
